Fair-trade designer decorations from Kibibi
Kibibi is an online designer store, selling products in a contemporary African design – reflecting the culture but at the same time being a step away from the traditional “out of Africa” theme. “Our aim was to produce quality home decor and gifts based on local culture, fabrics and skills”, says Teresa Murphy, founder of Kibibi. After a fabulous couple of years living in Tanzania Teresa has found she couldn’t completely leave it behind so decided to bring a little piece with her back to the UK and spread the word.
She loves fabric and crafting but also believes that fair trade is one of the keys to combating world poverty. At Kibibi you could find great range of fair trade and eco-friendly home decors, accessories and jewellery, cushions, kitchen hand-crafted aprons, shopping bags, Christmas cards and decorations – just perfect for the festive season. Which is even better, all Kibibi products are made from recycled materials, including glass, metal and paper.
For example the paper used to make scribble pads, bookmarks, and Christmas cards is made from banana, onion and pineapple fibre. They are then coloured using natural dyes.
The designer bags and the lovely small hearts, ideal for gifts of even for a Christmas tree decoration are hand-stitched and decorated using masai beads and sequins.
All the fabrics used in the hearts and bags are purchased in the local market supporting a whole range of local traders.
